1st Hour: English III, American Literature

We will be studying American literature, its context in American history, and its influence on our culture today.  Students will complete a variety of essays throughout the year.  Each quarter, students will be expected to read a novel by an American author from the instructor's approved list.  We will also be practicing different skills in preparation for the ACT test.

1st quarter:  Native American oral tradition, Puritan writing, the Rationalists and the American Revolution, and the Romantic movement

2nd quarter:  Slave Narratives, Civil War primary sources, Regionalism, and the Women's Movement

3rd quarter:  Modernism and the short story

4th quarter:  Contemporary Writing, The Crucible, Roots
