Georges-Pierre Seurat(1859 –1891) was a French Post-Impressionist painter and draftsman. He is noted for his innovative use of drawing media and for devising the technique of painting known as pointillism. His large-scale work A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte (1884–1886) altered the direction of modern art by initiating Neo-impressionism. Neo-impressionism was a late 19th-century movement in French painting that sought to improve on Impressionism through a systematic approach to form and color, particularly using pointillist technique.
Pointillism is a technique of painting in which small, distinct dots of pure color are applied in patterns to form an image. We used Q-tips to make the distinct dots in our artwork.
Students in first, second and third grade studied the following design elements of art in the making of their own Seurat Composition: Color (warm, cool), Geometric Shape (circle, oval, square), Lines, Pattern and the Form of Pointillistic Art.
